Abstract

Background: Lemongrass has many potentials to exploit. The study of the white Lemongrass tree growing in Can Tho will contribute to improving the value of crops. Objectives: To determine the binomial nomenclature; To investigate the optimal essential oil distillation conditions; To determine the composition of the essential oil. Materials and methods: The binomial nomenclature was determined by DNA sequencing method. Intelligent softwares were applied for the optimization of extraction procedure. The chemical compositions of essential oil were analyzed by GC/MS. Results: The binomial nomenclature was Cymbopogon citratus; the optimal conditions for distillation of lemongrass were achieved; GC-MS analysis showed twenty-one compounds from sheaths and ten compounds from blades. Conclusion: Geranial and neral were two main constituents in essential oils from the leaves and stalks of Cymbopogon citratus.
