Abstract

Background: The infectious prevalence and antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus in particular (MRSA) is a major concern for public health in Vietnam and around the world. Objectives: To determine the rate of infection and antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria at Can Tho Central General Hospital in 2019-2020. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out of 521 strains of Staphylococcus spp. Collecting data on the identification of Staphylococcus spp and antibiotic resistance test with 16 commonly used antibiotics on the automated microbiological testing machine. Results: In 521 strains of Staphylococci isolated, there were 375 strains of Staphylococcus aureus, accouted for 71.97%. These S.aureus species were isolated from 143 latex specimens (38.1%), 88 swabs, accounting for 23.5% (including umbilical swab, skin swab, eye swab, nose swab, ...), 53 samples talk about 14.1%; 52 blood samples accounted for 13.9% and 39 other samples 10.4%. S.aureus was approximately 50% resistant to Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin, and Moxifloxacin; Clindamycin 21.1%; intermediate resistance to antibiotics Penicillin (99.2%), Oxacillin (85.6%), Erythromycin (81.3%); bacteria were completely sensitive to Vancomycin, Quinuppristin + dalfopristin (100%), 95.5% to Linezolid and 98.1% to Rifampicin. Methicilline-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) only accounted for 1.6% of the total Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated and no MRSA strains were resistant to Vancomycin antibiotic. Conclusion: There were 375 strains of S.aureus isolated, the majority of patients over 60 years old, concentrated in three types of specimens (pus, swab and blood). S.aureus strains were strongly resistant to Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin, Moxifloxacin had an equivalent resistance rate of approximately 50%; intermediate resistance to antibiotics Penicillin, Oxacillin, Erythromycin with a very high rate of 99.2%, 85.6% and 81.3% respectively; S.aureus was completely sensitive to Vancomycin, Quinuppristin + dalfopristin (100%), more than 95% sensitive to antibiotics: Linezolid (95.5%), Notrofurantonin (96.9%), Rifampicin (98.1%). MRSA rate accounted for only 1.6% of the total 375 strains of S.aureus and strains of MRSA fully sensitive to Vancomycin with MIC <1.5 µg/mL.
