STUDY ON LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY FOR ASCENDING COLON CANCER: PATHOLOGY RESULTS AND POST OPERATIVE CARE
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Laparoscopy surgery for colon cancer in general and right colon cancer in particular, which have been proven to be effective, have been introduced and developed in Viet Nam since the year of 2002. However, there are only a few research studies in this domain in Can Tho. Objectives: To investigate pathology results and postoperative care of patients who were diagnosed with ascending colon cancer and treated by laparoscopic surgery. Materials and methods: Cohort study of 54 patients who were diagnosed with ascending colon cancer and underwent laparoscopic surgery at Can Tho Central General Hospital, Can Tho Oncology Hospital and Can Tho University and Pharmacy Hospital from 2018 - 2020. Results: Postoperative cytopathology resulted in 100% adenocarcinoma, 57.5% of total cases were classified T4, 63.0% of cases were N0 and 57.5% of patients were diagnosed stage III. Postoperative care recorded 7 cases of incision infection, 3 cases of postoperative bleeding and 1 case of pneumonia along with incision infection. Patients diagnosed with ASA III were more likely to have complications than the other two groups (p=0.001). Postoperative time length of patients who were 60 years old and above was extensively higher than those who were beneath 60 years old. All patients overcame postoperative period. Conclusion: Pathology-based staging resulted in 5.6% stage I, 37.0% stage II and 57.4% stage III. The more severe the ASA classification was the longer postoperative hospital stay and the higher complication risks would be. There was a significant difference in postoperative time length between patients who were 60 years old and above and those who were below 60 years old.
