CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS, RADIOGRAPHIC FEATURES AND EVALUATION ON TREATMENT RESULTS OF MANDIBULAR FRACTURES USING MINI-PLATES AND SCREWS AT CAN THO CENTRAL GENERAL HOSPITAL IN 2019-2020

Abstract
Background: Mandibular trauma accounts for a significant portion of facial fractures, and the diagnosis and management of these injuries remain challenging because of improved treatment techniques. Using miniplates and screws to restore pretraumatic maxillomandibular orientation could bring good surgical results to the patient, but it has not been fully reported in Can Tho in recent times. Objectives: This article was to describe clinical features, radiographs and to evaluate the results of mandibular rigid internal fixation using mini-plates and screws. Materials and methods: The quasi-experimental study presented 50 mandibular fractures treated with miniplates and screws. Data were collected including lip feeling, occlusion, fracture location. Treatment results were assessed at 3, 6 months after surgery. Results: The rate of lower lip numbness was 48.0%. All patients had pain, malocclusion and limited jaw movement. One fracture, 2 fractures and more than 2 fractures accounted for 46.0%, 40.0% and 14.0%, severally. The incidences of the fractures were as follows: angle (10.0%), symphyses (50.0%), body (6.0%), combination type (34.0%). One (12.0%), 2 (54.0%) or more than 2 (34.0%) miniplates were used for rigid fixation. The rates of fair and good treatment results were 74.0% and 26.0%, respectively. Conclusion: Clinical characteristics and radiographic features play an important role in diagnosing of mandibular fractures. Using miniplates and screws for the management of mandibular fractures was able to improve treatment outcomes.
