EVALUATION OF TREATMENT RESULTS BY THE MODIFIED WIDMAN FLAP SURGERY ON CHRONIC PERIODONTITIS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL, 2018-2020

Abstract
Background: Periodontal disease is a common clinical disease. Clinical trials have shown that both surgical and non-surgical treatments were effective in reducing inflammation and stabilizing adhesion. However, surgical treatment was more effective. Objectives: To describe the clinical, X ray characteristics and to evaluate the modified Widman flap surgery resulted in chronic periodontitis treatment at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Materials and methods: A clinical trial was carried out to study the effect of modified Widman flap procedure in patients with chronic periodontal disease. Ninety patients were selected for study at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from June 2018 to April 2020. After surgical treatment, the patients were recalled for prophylaxis once every 3 months, clinical and radiological re-examinations were performed in 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Results: Reduction of probing depth was 1.25±0.55mm, gain in the level of clinical attachment was 1.17±0.58mm in average at 3 postoperative months, 1.86±0.95mm and 1.68±0.89mm respectively at postoperative 6 months. The measurements also showed that site with initially deep pockets exhibited more pronounced gain of clinical attachment and reduction of probing depth than sites with initially shallow pockets. Statistically significant improvement in most of variables were found, including reduction of probing depth, gain in clinical attachment level after 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Conclusions: Surgical therapy with the modified Widman flap procedure was effective method for the treatment of chronic periodontitis in terms of reduction in periodontal pocket depth, gain in the level of clinical attachment and reduction in gingival inflammation.
