Abstract

Background: Adverse drug reactions are an important clinical problem.  They account for about 5% of all hospital admissions. Thus, monitoring adverse drug reactions are vital to patient safety through reporting adverse drug reactions of medical staff (including medical doctors, pharmacists and nurses)  at hospital. Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of medical staff working at Can Tho General Hospital towards adverse drug reaction reporting scheme. Materials and methods: Medical staff (including medical doctors, pharmacists and nurses) working at hospital and ADR reporting scheme. Cross-sectional and questionnaire-based study. Results: The overall response rate of interviewees was high (>90%). The average report completeness score increases from 0.9 to 0.98. Nurses were the main group reporting ADR (75%). The participation of doctors and pharmacists in reporting ADRs was still limited. 82.6% of interviewees report ADR as soon as adverse drug reactions appear and 89.8% confirmed the importance of ADR reporting in asurance of the patient is safety. It is difficult to identify the suspected drug and that it is difficult to determine the severity of ADR are the common causes that the medical staff does not report. Conclusion: The medical staff have the good knowledge, attitude and practice in ADR reporting, which accounts for a low rate (less than 50%). Pharmacists were better in knowledge, attitude and practice of ADR reporting than docters and nurses. In addition, some main reasons for under-reporting have been identified.
