THE SITUATION OF NEW ONSET PAIN AFTER STROKE AND CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CENTRAL POST-STROKE PAIN

Abstract
Background: Post-stroke pain is a common complication, but it is often negleted, significantly impacts on the quality of life. The estimated prevalence of post-stroke pain and central post-stroke pain ranges widely among studies. Objectives: To determine the proportion of new onset pain and describe the clinical characteristics of central pain in the first week after stroke. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study in 251 patients with first-ever stroke to Neurology Department of Can Tho Central General Hospital from 2/2019 to 6/2019. Results: 36.7% of patients (92/251) experienced new onset pain in the first week after stroke, headache 31.5%, shoulder pain 4.4%, other joint pain 4.4%, central post-stroke pain 3.6%. More than one pain type was reported by 6% of the patients. The characteristics of central post-stroke were mainly numbness (88.9%) and tingling (77.7%); moderate pain intensity was 77.8%. Conclusion: Post-stroke pain is quite common, occurring in more than one-third of patients in the acute post-stroke stage, central pain accounts for a low proportion.
