Abstract

Background: Since the first laparoscopic appendectomy was performed by Kurt Semm in 1981, laparoscopic appendectomy with 3 trocars has gradually considered as the gold standard treatment for acute appendicitis. With a view of minimally invasive surgery, the surgeons have tried to reduce the number of trocars to reduce postoperative pain, complications, hospital stay and improve cosmetic results. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the outcome of one trocar laparoscopic appendectomy for acute appendicitis. Materials and methods: This was a prospective, descriptive study without control group. The inclusion criteria included all patients with acute appendicitis and older than 15 years of age who underwent one trocar laparoscopic appendectomy in Can Tho General Hospital between May 2020 and June 2021. Results: There were 36 patients in the study. The ratio of female and male was 1.7, the median age  was 35.3 ± 14.7 years old. One trocar laparoscopic appendectomies were performed in 35 patients, accounted for 97.2% and 1 case was required two more trocars, accounted in 2.8%. Wound infection was recorded in 2 patients (5.6%) and these two patients had appendiceal necrosis. The median hospital stay was 3.4 ± 0.7 days (range 2-5 days). All patients who underwent one trocar laparoscopic appendectomy seemed satisfied with their postoperative scars. Conclusions: One trocar laparoscopic appendectomy for acute appendicitis is a safe procedure with excellent cosmetic results.
