THE STUDY ON VEGETARIAN STATUS AND RELATED FACTORS TO VEGETARIANISM IN DONG THANH COMMUNE, BINH MINH TOWN, VINH LONG PROVINCE IN 2020

Abstract

Background: Vegetarianism has been a popular trend in Vietnam in recent years. Objectives: This study aims to determine the proportion of different types of vegetarian diets and factors related to vegetarianism in Dong Thanh commune, Binh Minh town, Vinh Long province in 2020. Materials and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study analysis of over 419 adults. Gathered information through direct interviews with pre-structured questionnaires. Results: 57.5% of participants were vegetarians, of which 10% were long-term vegans; 47.5% were semi-vegetarians, in which 10.6% were vegetarians for several months in a year and 89.4% were vegetarians for several days in a month. The vegan rate accounted for 89.3%. The most popular reasons for vegetarian diet were religion and beliefs (39.27%). The most common difficulty in vegetarian diet was to cook separate from non-vegetarian (15.4%). The vegetarian rate was statistically significantly higher in the target groups: Female; people >60 years old; education background: illiterate, primary and secondary school; Kinh people; people have religions; having a family member is vegetarian and has chronic diseases. Conclusion: The general vegetarian rate was 57.5%, of which the long-term vegan rate was 10% and the semi-vegetarian rate was 47.5%. The majority of people was vegan (89.3%). The rate of vegetarianism differs in terms of genders, age groups, education backgrounds, ethnicity, religion, having someone in the family who is a vegetarian and has a chronic illness.
