Viêm khớp dạng thấp (VKDT) là một bệnh lý tự miễn hệ thống điển hình, diễn biến mạn tính với các biểu hiện tại khớp, ngoài khớp và toàn thân với nhiều mức độ khác nhau. Hậu quả nghiêm trọng nhất của bệnh là tình trạng huỷ hoại cấu trúc khớp dẫn đến sự tàn phế. Việc sử dụng sớm nhóm thuốc chống thấp cải thiện diễn tiến tự nhiên của bệnh (DMARDs) ngay khi có chẩn đoán xác định là nền tảng của các chiến lược điều trị viêm khớp dạng thấp. Trong hai thập kỷ qua, cùng với sự tiến bộ của sinh học phân tử và di truyền học, cơ chế bệnh sinh của bệnh viêm khớp dạng thấp đã được xác định tương đối rõ ràng và điều trị bệnh đã có những bước tiến đáng kể. Nhiều thế hệ thuốc DMARDs đã lần lượt ra đời từ nhóm DMARDs cổ điển (Methotrexate) đến các thuốc sinh học (Tocillizumab) và hướng đến trong tương lai là những thuốc DMARDs điều trị trúng đích (kháng JAK). Song song đó, xu hướng điều trị bệnh viêm khớp dạng thấp đã có nhiều thay đổi vượt bậc. Việc phát hiện ở giai đoạn sớm, điều trị tích cực ngay từ đầu, chiến lược “điều trị theo mục tiêu” và việc sử dụng sớm các thuốc DMARD cổ điển kết hợp các thuốc sinh học mới để đạt mục tiêu lui bệnh càng nhanh càng tốt chính là những phương pháp tối ưu giúp thay đổi được kết cục cho bệnh nhân viêm khớp dạng thấp.
