NEEDLESTICK AND SHARPS INJURIES AMONG NURSING STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY IN 2020

Abstract
Background: When nurses take care of patients, they face many risks, especially needlestick and sharp injuries. It is a major cause of occupational exposures. Nursing students lack of knowledge and skills than nurses, so the risk of needlestick and sharp injuries is even more concerning. Objectives: (1) To determine the prevalence of needlestick and sharp injuries among nursing students and (2) to find out some related factors to needlestick and sharp injuries among nursing students. Materials and methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study from November 2020 to March 2021. Participants were 111 third and final-year nursing students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, who agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected by a questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS 20.0 software. Results: There was 51.4% of nursing students got needlestick and sharp injuries within 6 months. In which, the maximum number of needlestick and sharp injuries was 6 times, the average number of needlestick and sharp injuries was 1.25 times ± 1.604 times. The 3rd-year students had needlestick and sharp injuries 1.265 times more than the 4th-year students (p<0.001) in the last 6 months. Conclusion: Nursing students in Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy were at hight risk of needlestick and sharp injuries. It is necessary to make appropriate interventions to prevent needlestick and sharp injuries among nursing students.
