ORAL MUCOSA LESIONS AND SALIVARY FLOW IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS AND HYPERTENSION AT CAN THO OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus and hypertension has been popular diseases in recent years. Oral mucosa lesions and reduced salivary flow have been more common in patients with diabetes and hypertension. Objectives: Describing lesions of the oral mucosa and determine average salivary flow in patients with diabetes and hypertension. Materials and methods: A case series study in 37 diabetic patients, 68 hypertension patients and 77 diabetic patients and high blood pressure having health checkup at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, from January 2019 to December 2019. Collected information included age, sex, duration of diabetes, blood sugar, hypertension duration, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, oral mucosa lesions and non-stimulant total salivary flow. Results: Women were more than men. The mean age was 60.31±9.064. The average duration of diabetes mellitus was 3.58±4.00, the average years of hypertension was 5.00±4.03. Dry mouth, gingivitis, denture stomatitis, fissured tongue were common lesions. Patients with hypertension and hypertension with diabetes had a higher rate of gingivitis compared to diabetes patients (p=0.048). Diabetes patients with saliva flow <0.1mL was higher than hypertension and hypertension group with diabetes, 29.7% compared to 19.1%, 18.2% respectively. Conclusions: Dry mouth, gingivitis, denture stomatitis, and fissured tongue were common oral lesions in patients with hypertension and diabetes. There was a decrease in saliva in patients with hypertension and diabetes.
