Abstract

Background: Epiphrenic esophageal diverticula are rare conditions that cause esophageal symptoms, such as dysphagia, regurgitation, and chest pain. Their pathogenesis is considered to be secondary to esophageal motility disorders and is associated with congenital weakness of the esophageal wall. The exact incidence is unknown but prevalence may vary from 0.06 to 4 % . Many treatments are now in place to alleviate a patient's symptoms and improve their quality of life. Case report: A case of epiphrenic diverticulum was diagnosed and treated with laparoscopic diverticulectomy. Symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options are discussed. Discussion: All patients diagnosed as having an epiphrenic esophageal diverticulum should undergo a trial of conservative treatment. If the response is poor then laparoscopic diverticulectomy is the treatment of choice for this lesion.
