Abstract

Background: Apical periodontitis is one of the most prevalent diseases of the teeth. Nowadays, this condition can be treated in just one visit. There are few studies about this approach in Viet Nam. Objectives: To survey the clinical and radiographic features of single-rooted teeth with apical periodontitis and to compare results of endodontic treatment of this condition completed in single visit versus multiple visits. Materials and methods: A descriptive study with intervention on 68 patients having single-rooted teeth with apical periodontitis indicated for endodontic treatment. Patients were randomly divided into 2 groups equally. Patients in group I were treated in one visit with the use of multiple irrigation solutions activated by ultrasonic tips. Treatment for patients in group II were performed in multiple visits with the use of calcium hydroxide as an intracanal medicament. Results: Most of the teeth were incisors (76.5%). The percentage of teeth with discoloration, apical mucous swelling, sinus tract and pain on percussion were 26.5%, 44.1%, 38.2% and 58.1%, respectively. Teeth with PAI score of 4 were the most common (44.1%). Teeth treated in one visit had lower incidence of pain on percussion 1 week after obturation (11.8% compared to 17.6%) and higher rate of PAI improvement 3 months after treatment (94.1% compared to 85.3%) in comparison with those obturated after several appointments. However, these differences were not statistically significant. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in treatment results between one-visit and multiple-visit endodontic therapy in teeth with apical periodontitis.
