Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Crown lengthening surgery is a periodontal surgery which helps lengthen the clinical crown of a tooth damaged subgingivally. There are few studies about this kind of surgery in Viet Nam. Objectives: To survey clinical features of teeth indicated for crown lengthening surgery and to evaluate treatment results of this type of surgery. Materials and methods: A descriptive study with intervention on 37 patients with subgingivally damaged teeth indicated for crown lengthening surgery at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Results: Upper teeth accounted for 75.7% of the teeth in the study. Premolars were the most popular type of teeth (48.6%). Caries was the biggest reason for the patients to have their teeth examined (59.5%). Most of the teeth were damaged subgingivally by caries (83.8%). At baseline, the mean GI and PD value were 1.4 ± 0.86 and 2.51 ± 0.65, respectively. The mean GI decreased from 1.24 ± 0.86 at baseline to 0.59 ± 0.55 after 1 month and to 0.29 ± 0.46 after 3 months. The mean PD fell after 1 month and 3 month as well, to reach the value of 1.51 ± 0.56 and 1.21 ± 0.42, respectively. The differences between mean GI and PD at baseline and 1 month, 3 months after sugery were statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: Crown lengthening surgery helps lengthen the clinical crown of a tooth damaged subgingivally, reduce probing depth and improve gingival condition.
