THE PREVALENCE AND RELATED FACTORS TO RISK BIRTH DEFECTS IN PREGNANT WOMEN IN THE FIRST 3 MONTHS OF PREGNANCY AT SOC TRANG OBSTETRICS AND PEDIATRICS HOSPITAL IN 2020 – 2021

Abstract
Background: Birth defects are fetal abnormalities that appear in the fetus and have a great effect on the baby in the first years of life. According to statistics of the World Health Organization, the prevalence of birth defects accounts for 3 - 4% of the total number of children born, including live and dead babies at birth. Objectives: To determine the rate and some factors related to suspected birth defects in pregnant women in the first 3 months of pregnancy at the Soc Trang Obstetrics & Pediatrics Hospital in 2020-2021. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 370 pregnant women in the first 3 months of pregnancy, who visited and take cared for at Soc Trang Obstetrics & Pediatrics Hospital from June 2020 to March 2021.All pregnant women have been taken an ultrasound and double test for screening birth defect. Results: The rate of suspected birth defects of pregnant women in the study was 9.2%. Some factors related to the suspected birth defects were: maternal age under 18 years old, poor economy, personal and family history of birth defect, the habit of drinking or beer and secondhand smoke, with all p<0,05). Conclusion: The prevalence of suspected birth defects in pregnant women in Soc Trang province is rather high. It is necessary to take an intervention about communication and education to take care reproductive health in pregnant women to reduce birth defect for women in the community.
