THE OUTCOMES OF STARR PROCEDURE FOR RECTOCELE TREATMENT AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: Rectocele is a herniation (bulge) of the rectum into the back wall of the vagina. Many treatments are currently being offered to alleviate the symptoms of patients and improve their quality of life. In particular, STARR procedure has brought many desirable results. Objectives: To evaluate the results of STARR procedure in the treatment of rectocele, the degree of symptom improvement, and the complication rate of surgery. Materials and methods: 31 cases of rectocele treated by STARR procedure were during the period from February 2019 to May 2021 at Can Tho University Hospital of Medicine and Pharmacy were included in this study. Results: The mean age of the patients was 53.2 ± 11.0 (29 to 76) years old. The rate of completion of difficult defecation was 77,4%. The rate of pain in the first day after surgery was 58% (18/31) and urinary retention after surgery was 25% (8/31). Conclusion: STARR procedure is a relatively effective and safe treatment for rectocele with an acceptable complication rate.
