A STUDY OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND RELATED FACTORS IN PRETERM CHILDREN AT THE OUTPATIENT CLINIC OF SOC TRANG OBSTETRICS AND PEDIATRICS HOSPITAL IN 2020-2021

Abstract

 Background: According to statistics of the WHO, there are about 15 million preterm children were born annually. The percentage of preterm birth tends to increase. Monitoring and evaluation of nutrition on preterm or underweight infants during hospitalization is very important. It allows detecting early children who have postnatal growth retardation and giving them appropriate interventions to reduce complications later on. Objectives: Studying nutritional status of preterm children and evaluating the intervention results within 6 months after they were discharged at the Outpatient clinic of Soc Trang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital in 2020-2021. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 161 preterm children in Soc Trang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital from May 2022 to March 2021. Results: There were 42.9% of preterm children had low birth weight. Some factors related to the rate of low birth weight of preterm children were: maternal malnutrition and mother’s diseases. Conclusion: The rate of malnutrition among preterm infants was 42.9%. This rate is quite high. It is needed to promote communication and education of pregnant women on risk factors to prevent the risk of preterm birth and measures to care for preterm babies.
