Abstract

  Background: The prevalence of needle sticks and sharp injuries in previous studies among nursing students is quite high and has serious consequences. Therefore, study about knowledge and factors related to the prevention of sharps injury among nursing students is necessary to suggest suitable solutions to prevent and reduce sharps injuries for nursing students. Objectives: (1) Determine the proportion of nursing students who have the correct knowledge on prevention of injuries caused by medical sharp objects of nursing students and (2) find out factors related to the knowledge on prevention of injuries caused by medical sharp objects of nursing student. Materials and methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study from November 2020 to March 2021. Participants were 111 third and final-year nursing students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, who agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected by a questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS 20.0 software.  Results: 69.4 percent of students have the correct knowledge about preventing sharp injury with an average score of 33.33 (SD=5.03). Male students, final-year students, students who no experience with sharp injuries, students with a cumulative GPA of good and fairly respectively had knowledge better than female, third-year nursing students, students with sharp injuries experiences and students with a cumulative GPA of the medium; however, the difference is not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: The correct knowledge of nursing students about the prevention of sharp injuries is not good, especially treatment knowledge after sharp injury.
