Abstract

Background: Traumatic brain injury remains a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide, especially in developing countries like Vietnam. Recent Alcohol Laws and alcohol concentration restriction may help reduce the incidence of traumatic brain injury. Therefore, further research on the epidemiological characteristics of traumatic brain injury is necessary. Objectives: Investigating the epidemiological characteristics of traumatic brain injury patients at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Materials and method: This cross-sectional descriptive study included traumatic brain injury patients who were treated at the hospital from January 2021 to December 2022. Results: A total of 79 cases were analyzed, of which 54 patients

(68.35%) were male and 25 patients (31.65%) were female. The average age was 46.86±18.66 years, with the youngest being 19 years old and the oldest being 94 years old. The majority of patients (74.68%) were of working age (between 20 and under 60 years old). The leading cause of traumatic brain injury was traffic accidents, accounting for 52 cases (65.82%). Among these cases, 100% were 2-3 wheeled vehicles -related accidents (motorcycle or bicycle), with 38.46% involving alcohol. All traumatic brain injury cases were of mild to moderate severity. Combined injuries were found in 37/79 cases, accounting for 46.84%. Conclusion: It is necessary to continue to propagate and enforce in ensuring traffic safety and preventing falls in the elderly. First aid traumatic brain injury requires multi-specialty coordination.
