HEALTHCARE STUDENTS’ VOLUNTEERING EXPERIENCES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Abstract

  Background: Healthcare students had significantly contributed to the COVID-19 pandemic response. However, volunteering experiences of students have not been thoroughly investigated in Vietnam. Objectives: To explore healthcare students’ experiences to confront the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and method: In-depth interviews were conducted on 23 students of a public university of medicine and pharmacy in Da Nang who had volunteered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were analyzed using a content analysis method. Results: Students gained many benefits from participating in volunteering activities. The most mentioned benefits included increasing professional understanding, improving communication and teamwork skills, increasing self-confidence, meeting many people, and having more empathy with people. However, the participants expressed disadvantages facing during volunteering time, mainly non-cooperative behaviors of people. Other difficulties included poor living and working conditions, fear of infection, misunderstandings and ineffective collaboration with the local authority, and discriminatory behaviors of local people. Conclusion: Support from the university and local authority is needed to help students contribute most effectively to volunteering.
