APPLICATION OF THE EPLEY MANEUVER IN THE TREATMENT OF BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO

Abstract

Background: The application of the Epley maneuver in the treatment of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is highly effective. Objectives: To describe the clinical characteristics, evaluate the treatment results after performing the Epley maneuver in patients with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo and finding some related factors to the results of treatment of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo the treatment results by Epley maneuver. Materials and methods: Case series (30 patients), in 2 Internal Medicine Departmen of Soc Trang Province General Hospital. Results: There are more women than men with the ratio female:male = 2:1. The lowest age in the study was 27 years old; The highest is 72 years old. 46.7% of patients had symptoms of vertigo, accounting for the highest percentage. The most common accompanying symptoms were nausea 56.7%, vomiting (13.3%), tinnitus (26.7%), hearing loss (6.7%). The rate of out of vertigo was 70% (21 cases); The symptom improvement rate was 16.7% (5 cases); The rate of no improvement (failure) accounted for 13.3% (4 cases). 29 patients belonged to the posterior canal; 1 patient belonged to the anterior canal. No relationship was found between the general characteristics of the study sample and the treatment results by Epley's test. Conclusions: The application of the Epley maneuver in the treatment of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is highly effective, simple, and inexpensive.
