SELF-CARE PRACTICE IN PATIENTS WITH AN INTESTINAL STOMA AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: The intestinal stoma causes changes in physical and psychological aspects that require considerable adaptation on the part of patients. Patients with stomas need to change their lifestyle and learn skills for self-care of their stomas. Self-care of the stoma requires proper practice to minimize negative effects on quality of life and prevent complications. Objectives: To determine the percentage of patients who practice correct self-care for intestinal stomas; explore some factors related to the correct practice of intestinal stoma self-care. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 74 patients with intestinal stomas at the Department of General Surgery, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital by interviewing and observing based on available questionnaires. Results: 45.9% of patients implemented correct practices in the care of intestinal stomas. Education level, occupation, and nurses’ instruction were factors found to be associated with correct patient practice. Conclusions: The percentage of patients who implemented correct practices in the care of the intestinal stoma was still limited. Therefore, managers and nursing care need to pay attention to this situation and related factors in order to have appropriate intervention solutions.
