Abstract

Background: Vulvovaginitis is a very common gynaecological disease at present. Some researches showed that the combination of antifungal drugs and essential oils can improve the activity on pathogenic microorganisms. Objectives: Surveying the antibacterial and antifungal activities of gel product containing combination of clotrimazole and Ocimum gratissimum essential oil compounded in the laboratory. Materials and method: Surveying the antibacterial and antifungal activities of gynaecological gel product by agar diffusion method and broth dilution method according to guidelines of Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Results: The gel product has the ability to inhibit the growth of 4 bacterial and 5 fungal strains with the diameter of microorganism inhibitory zone about 18-26 mm and MIC value about 125-250 µg/mL (calculated to product weight). Conclusion: Compounding process did not have influence on the active ingredients and the product could release active ingredients having effect on tested microorganisms.
