Abstract

Background: Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma is one of the most common head and neck cancers in Southeast Asia and Vietnam. Epstein-Barr virus is considered closely associated with the pathogenesis of the disease, particularly in non-keratinizing histological types. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of EBV infection detected by real-time PCR and its associated factors in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma at Can Tho Oncology Hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with analytical components was conducted on 37 patients histopathologically diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. EBV-DNA was performed on plasma samples using real-time PCR. Results: The prevalence of EBV-DNA was 73.0%. Male patients accounted for 75.7%, with a mean age of 53.5 ± 14.2 years. Type III was the most common histopathological type (51.4%). Most patients were diagnosed at stage III (73.0%). No statistically significant association was observed between EBV infection status and sex, age group, occupation, histopathological type, or disease stage (p > 0.05). Conclusion: EBV-DNA was detected at a high rate in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. EBV infection tended to be associated with histopathological characteristics and disease stage; however, these associations did not reach statistical significance in this study.
