Abstract

Background: Parasitic roundworm infection Toxocara sp in dogs and cats is a disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. The incidence of this disease is increasing. Individuals become infected by ingesting Toxocara sp eggs containing larvae through food or water sources. Objectives: 1) To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients infected with Toxocara sp. 2) To evaluate some related factors in patients infected with Toxocara sp.  Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with convenient sampling was conducted on 76 patients infected with Toxocara sp larva who were identified using the ELISA test for positive Toxocara sp antibodies and had at least one clinical symptom and visited at Can Tho General Hospital from January 2022 to September 2022. Results: The study was conducted on 76 patients, the disease manifested in the skin and mucous membranes in 94.7% of cases, in the digestive organs in 19.7% of cases, and in the nervous system in 15.8% of cases. The number of eosinophils in peripheral blood was within the normal range in 78.9% of cases and slightly elevated in 21.1% of cases. All patients had contact with dogs and cats, received regular deworming treatment, drank boiled water, and had a habit of consuming raw vegetables and undercooked meat, accounting for 71.1% of cases. Conclusion: Toxocara sp infection in humans primarily manifests in the skin and mucous membranes, and paraclinically, there is a mild increase in eosinophils in 21.1% of cases. All patients had contact with dogs and cats, and 71.1% had a habit of consuming raw vegetables and undercooked meat.
