APPROPRIATE ANTIBIOTIC USE IN INPATIENT TREATMENT AT A HOSPITAL IN CAN THO CITY IN 2025
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Irrational use of antibiotics is a major driver of antimicrobial resistance, leading to reduced treatment effectiveness and increased healthcare costs. Objectives: To assess the characteristics and prevalence of rational antibiotic use among inpatients at a hospital in Can Tho City, Vietnam, in 2025. Materials and methods: A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 312 medical records of hospitalized patients prescribed antibiotics to determine patterns of antibiotic use and to evaluate the overall appropriateness of antibiotic use based on predefined criteria, including indication, dosage, route of administration, duration of therapy, antibiotic combination and antibiotic switching. Results: The beta-lactam group accounted for the highest proportion of antibiotic use (59.8%). Most patients received antibiotics for ≤ 7 days (60.9%) and were treated with monotherapy (56.1%). The majority of cases did not require modification of the initial regimen (61.9%). Among patients who underwent regimen changes, most were adjusted once (66.4%), primarily due to lack of clinical response to the initial antibiotic therapy. The proportion of patients showing clinical improvement or symptom relief was high (92.6%). The overall rate of appropriate antibiotic use was (72.8%). Conclusions: Antibiotic use in the hospital was generally appropriate; however, further optimization is needed through increased use of microbiological testing and the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs.
