FUNCTIONAL OUTCOMES AND QUALITY OF LIFE FOLLOWING HIP ARTHROPLASTY FOR FEMORAL NECK FRACTURES
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Femoral neck fractures are common in the elderly and are associated with significant functional impairment and reduced quality of life. Hip arthroplasty is an effective treatment option that improves functional outcomes and health-related quality of life. Objective: To evaluate functional outcomes and quality of life following hip arthroplasty in patients with femoral neck fractures at Can Tho Central General Hospital during 2025–2026. Materials and methods: A prospective descriptive case series without a control group was conducted on 50 patients with femoral neck fractures treated with hip arthroplasty. Outcomes were assessed using the Harris Hip Score (HHS), EQ-5D, and EQ-VAS. Results: The mean age was 72.4 ± 8.6 years, with a female predominance (female-to-male ratio of about 2.85). Most fractures were classified as AO/OTA 31B3 (98%). Cementless hemiarthroplasty was the most commonly performed procedure (76%). The mean postoperative HHS was 86.8 ± 8.5, and 88% of patients achieved good-to-excellent outcomes. After surgery, the pain/discomfort domain improved markedly, with 86% of patients at level 1; however, the postoperative EQ-VAS at 3 months (84.56 ± 6.65) remained lower than the pre-injury level (93.37 ± 4.43). Conclusion: Hip arthroplasty is an effective treatment for femoral neck fractures, providing favorable functional outcomes and improved quality of life.
