Abstract

Background: Mandibular fractures of the symphyseal region are common injuries in maxillofacial trauma. Although miniplate fixation has demonstrated several advantages, further evaluation of its clinical effectiveness in real-world settings is warranted. Objectives: To evaluate the outcomes of surgical treatment for mandibular symphysis fractures using miniplate osteosynthesis. Materials and methods: Uncontrolled clinical interventional study was conducted on 35 patients with mandibular symphysis fractures treated by open reduction and internal fixation using miniplates at Vinh Long General Hospital from May 2025 to January 2026. Results: Most patients were younger than 30 years old (80.0%), with males accounting for 77.1%. Traffic accidents were the leading cause of injury (80.0%). The majority of patients had a preoperative period of 3–7 days (91.4%), and the mean operative time was 30.1 ± 6.6 minutes. Regarding fracture characteristics, most fractures occurred at the symphysis region (91.4%), involved a single fracture line (94.2%), and showed no displacement (85.7%). After 3 months of follow-up, most patients achieved good overall outcomes (94.2%). Conclusion: Open reduction and internal fixation of mandibular symphysis fractures using miniplates is a safe and effective treatment method, particularly in simple fracture cases.
