Abstract

Background: Chronic urticaria is a complex disease with multifactorial pathogenesis, in which parasitic infections have been increasingly recognized as potential etiological factors or important comorbidities. Toxocara spp. and Echinococcus spp. have been reported to induce chronic inflammatory responses and immune dysregulation, thereby contributing to the persistence of chronic urticaria. Objective: To determine the seroprevalence of Toxocara spp. and Echinococcus spp. infections and to analyze associated risk factors among patients with chronic urticaria at Can Tho Central General Hospital during 2025–2026. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 270 patients diagnosed with chronic urticaria. Serum antibodies against Toxocara spp. and Echinococcus spp. were detected using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: The seroprevalence of Toxocara spp. and Echinococcus spp. was 48.1% and 11.1%, respectively. The mean age of the participants was 38.18 ± 15.42 years (range: 16–82 years). Pet ownership (dogs and cats), frequent handling of dogs and cats, and consumption of raw vegetables, undercooked meat, or animal viscera were significantly associated with seropositivity for both Toxocara spp. and Echinococcus spp. (p < 0.05). Frequent soil contact was significantly associated with Toxocara spp. seropositivity but showed no statistically significant association with Echinococcus spp. infection (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The seroprevalence of Toxocara spp. and Echinococcus spp. among patients with chronic urticaria was 48.1% and 11.1%, respectively. Pet ownership, frequent contact with dogs and cats, and consumption of raw vegetables, undercooked meat, or animal viscera were associated with a higher risk of seropositivity for both Toxocara spp. and Echinococcus spp.
