Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Schizophrenia is a chronic disease, accounting for about 0.3-0.5% of the population, usually with onset between the ages of 18-40. The disease is often relapsing, progressing through prodromal, onset, full-blown, and sequelae, with symptoms that may be remission, stabilize, or persist. Only about 10 to 20% of people treated for schizophrenia do not experience relapses; most people with schizophrenia have multiple relapses over time. In the world, there have been studies on clinical characteristics of schizophrenia to support early diagnosis and relapse in schizophrenic patients. There are also studies evaluating the treatment and management of schizophrenia. However, in Vietnam the research on this issue is still limited and incomplete. Objectives: To determine the situation and factors related to relapse in schizophrenia in Vinh Long Province in 2022-2023. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 569 schizophrenic patients are being managed outpatient treatment in Vinh Long province in 2022-2023. Results: The relapse rate in patients with schizophrenia is 19.3%. Some factors related to the recurrence rate are marriage, economy and adherence to drug therapy, the habit of drinking alcohol (p<0.05). Conclusion: The rate of relapse in patients with schizophrenia is quite high. It is necessary to emphasize the patient's adherence to drug use, and the relatives need to encourage and remind the patient to adhere to the drug use.
