POSTOPERATIVE CARCINOEMBRYONIC ANTIGEN LEVELS AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS IN PATIENTS WITH EARLY-STAGE COLORECTAL CANCER

Abstract

Background: Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is widely used for monitoring treatment response in colorectal cancer. Recent evidence suggests that postoperative CEA levels may also have prognostic value in patients with early-stage disease. Objectives: To investigate postoperative Carcinoembryonic antigen levels and associated factors in patients with early-stage colorectal cancer at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from May 2024 to May 2025. Materials and methods: A descriptive case-series study was conducted on 91 patients diagnosed with earlystage colorectal cancer who underwent curative surgery at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Results: The postoperative Carcinoembryonic antigen level was 5.6 ± 13.46 ng/mL with 14.3% of patients having values above the normal range. Disease stage was found to influence postoperative Carcinoembryonic antigen levels in patients with early-stage colorectal cancer. Conclusions: Most patients had postoperative CEA levels within the normal range. Disease stage was significantly associated with postoperative CEA levels in patients with early-stage colorectal cancer.
