Abstract

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) impairs quality of life. Proton pump inhibitors have limitations regarding response rates and side effects. Combining acupoint catgut embeedding with Huong Sa Luc Quan pills has potential for safe, synergistic effects but lacks full evaluation. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of acupoint catgut embedding combined with Huong Sa Luc Quan pills compared with Omeprazole 20 mg in patients with GERD at Binh Chanh General Hospital. Materials and methods: A controlled interventional study was conducted on 66 patients (GERD-Q ≥ 8, Los Angeles grade ≥ A on endoscopy, Helicobacter pylori negative). Participants were allocated into two groups: an intervention group (two sessions of acupoint catgut embedding plus Huong Sa Luc Quan pills, n = 33) and a control group (Omeprazole 20 mg, n = 33). Outcomes were assessed using the GERD-Q and GERD-related Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQL) scores at baseline (T0), day 14 (T14), and day 28 (T28). Results: After 28 days, both groups showed statistically significant improvement (p < 0.05). The symptom improvement rate was higher in the intervention group (66.67% vs. 21.21%; p < 0.05). HRQL scores decreased significantly in both groups, with greater improvement in the intervention group at T28 (p < 0.05). Adverse events were few, with no serious complications of catgut embedding observed. Conclusion: Combining acupoint catgut embedding with Huong Sa Luc Quan pills effectively improves GERD symptoms and quality of life, demonstrating better efficacy than Omeprazole and good clinical safety.
