CURRENT STATUS AND FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH NON-COMPLIANT PRESCRIBING OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINES AND HERBAL MEDICINAL PRODUCTS AT A TRADITIONAL MEDICINE HOSPITAL IN THE MEKONG DELTA

Abstract
Background: Prescribing traditional medicines and medicinal materials at a traditional medicine hospital requires compliance with Ministry of Health regulations in order to ensure treatment safety and effectiveness. Objective: To assess the current status and identify several factors associated with non-compliant prescribing of traditional medicines and herbal medicinal products at a Traditional Medicine Hospital. Materials and methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 330 prescriptions containing traditional medicines and medicinal materials at a Traditional Medicine Hospital. Results: The prevalence of non-compliant prescriptions was 48.5%. Wrong medicine selection accounted for the highest proportion (40.9%), followed by irrational drug combinations (33.5%) and incorrect dose/directions for use (25.6%). The criterion of prescribing medicines appropriate to the diagnosis and correct patient group reached 74.8%. The non-compliant prescribing group had lower knowledge of the ministerial circular, lower selfrated compliance, and lower recent training participation than the compliant prescribing group (p<0.05), with a higher mean number of medicines per prescription (3.04 ± 0.90 versus 2.45 ± 0.88; p<0.001). Conclusion: Non-compliant prescribing of traditional medicines and herbal medicinal products remained common, mainly involving medicine–diagnosis appropriateness, medicine selection, drug combinations, and dose/directions for use.
