CLINICAL AND PARACLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND OUTCOMES OF LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY FOR RECTAL CANCER IN ELDERLY PATIENTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of rectal cancer is a minimally invasive method that helps reduce pain and limit postoperative complications, particularly beneficial for elderly patients. Objectives: To describe the clinical and paraclinical features, and evaluate the treatment outcomes of rectal cancer in elderly patients. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional description, non-controlled clinical intervention, with the study group consisting of 46 rectal cancer patients who were indicated for laparoscopic colorectal resection at Can Tho Oncology Hospital from January 2025 to February 2026. Results: The mean age was 68.4±5 years, with a male-tofemale ratio of 1.42. The most common comorbidity was diabetes mellitus (52.2%). The predominant clinical symptoms were abdominal pain (45.7%) and hematochezia (69.6%). The mean operative time was 134.2±40.1 minutes. Postoperative complications occurred in 15.2% of patients, including surgical site infection (4.3%), pneumonia (2.2%), anastomotic bleeding (2.2%) and anastomotic leakage (6.5%). No cases of 30-day postoperative mortality were recorded. The average length of hospital stay was 7.5±2.2 days. Conclusion: This study shows that laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of rectal cancer in elderly patients yields favorable outcomes.
