Abstract

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is a leading cause of chronic pain and disability in the elderly. Due to its insidious progression and the challenges of treating advanced stages, an integrated approach combining Traditional Vietnamese Medicine and modern medicine is gaining attention. This strategy aims to enhance analgesic efficacy, improve functional recovery, and minimize the side effects associated with systemic anti-inflammatory drugs. Objective: To comparative effectiveness of catgut embedding combined with “Phong te thap” herbal medicine and low-level laser therapy versus lowlevel laser therapy combined with “Phong te thap” in managing pain and improving range of motion in patients with knee osteoarthritis at Tien Giang Hospital of Traditional Medicine (2025–2026). Materials and methods: 86 inpatients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis were hospitalized at the Traditional Medicine Hospital in Tien Giang 2025-2026. Results: The majority of subjects were aged 40–59, with a female predominance in both groups. Average BMI was 23,9 ± 3,37 kg/m² in the intervention group (IG) and 24,09 ± 2,67 kg/m² in the control group (CG). After 20 days of treatment, the IG showed superior clinical improvement: the no pain rate VAS reached 41.9% and mild pain 55.8% compared to 88.4% mild pain in the CG. Knee flexion recovery was significantly higher in the IG, with 58.1% achieving unrestricted ROM versus only 2.3% in the CG. Post-treatment WOMAC scores were 41,33 + 5,24 (IG) and 43,51 + 1,79 (CG). Conclusion: The multimodal protocol of catgut embedding, Phong te thap medicine, and and low-level laser therapy demonstrated significantly superior clinical outcomes compared to the control group (p<0,05).
