EVALUATION OF THE OUTCOMES OF PHACOEMULSIFICATION SURGERY IN PATIENTS WITH CATARACT AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL IN 2024 – 2026

Abstract
Background:Cataract remains one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, particularly in developing countries. Phacoemulsification is currently the most advanced surgical technique for cataract management. Objectives: To evaluate visual improvement and residual refractive outcomes following phacoemulsification in patients with cataract treated at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from 2024 to 2026. Materials and methods: A nonrandomized interventional clinical study was conducted on 120 eyes diagnosed with cataract and treated with phacoemulsification at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital during the study period (2024–2026). Results: At 1 month postoperatively, 56.7% of patients achieved good uncorrected visual acuity (≤0.15 logMAR), compared with 48.3% at 1 week. With spectacle correction, the proportion of patients achieving good visual acuity increased to 60.8%. A total of 86.7% of patients had a stable postoperative spherical equivalent within ±1.0D of the target refraction. Conclusions: Phacoemulsification is currently the leading modality for cataract treatment, enabling rapid visual rehabilitation and early refractive stability.
