Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Cartilage-exposed auricular wounds are common head and neck injuries resulting from trauma. If these are treated late or incorrectly, they will lead to severe aesthetic complications. Objectives: To describe the clinical features and classification of cartilage-exposed auricular wounds. To evaluate the treatment outcome of cartilage-exposed auricular wounds. Materials and methods: A prospective, descriptive cross-sectional study with clinical intervention was conducted on 70 patients diagnosed with cartilage-exposed auricular wounds. These patients were treated with tissue debridement and wound suturing to cover the cartilage at Can Tho Central General Hospital, Can Tho General Hospital, and Can Tho Children’s Hospital from 2024 to 2026. Results: The most patients were male (75%), with the highest prevalence in the 16-40 age group (64%). Traffic accident was the leading cause of injury (48%). Common symptoms included pain (100%), discharge (100%), swelling (85%) and auricular deformity (25%). The most frequent wound type was non - tissue loss wound (skin and cartilage laceration) (50%), while skin loss wounds were the least (5%). After 3 months, 77% of patients achieved good outcome, 17% achieved fair outcome, 6% achieved poor outcome. Conclusions: Cartilage-exposed auricular wounds primarily affected males aged 16-40 years, mostly due to traffic accidents. Common symptoms included pain, discharge, swelling. The non-tissue loss wound (skin and cartilage laceration) was the most prevalent type. Milder severity and early management will lead to good anatomical recovery as well as prevent complications.
