SARCOPENIA AND ITS ASSOCIATED FACTORS IN OLDER ADULTS WITH CHRONIC VIRAL HEPATITIS IN OUTPATIENT SETTINGS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Sarcopenia is common among older adults, particularly in patients with chronic liver disease. Chronic inflammation, metabolic disturbances, and malnutrition associated with chronic viral hepatitis may contribute to reduced muscle mass and strength. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and its associated factors among older outpatients with chronic viral hepatitis at Long An General Hospital in 2025. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 406 patients aged ≥ 60 years with chronic viral hepatitis. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the 2019 Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS 2019) criteria. Results: The mean age was 69 ± 6.8 years, and males accounted for 55.4% of the participants. The overall prevalence of sarcopenia was 28.8%. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that sarcopenia was associated with older age (OR = 1.2), longer disease duration (OR = 1.24), history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (OR = 12.3), smaller calf circumference (OR = 0.3), level of physical activity, and viral load (p ≤ 0.03). Conclusion: Sarcopenia is relatively common among older adults with chronic viral hepatitis. Early screening and appropriate interventions are essential to improve functional status and quality of life in this population.
