Abstract

Background: Pediatric sepsis is a serious pediatric emergency, causing high mortality and leaving severe sequelae. Therefore, this study was conducted to describe the clinical and subclinical characteristics of sepsis in children, and simultaneously determine some factors related to treatment outcomes, contributing to guiding early diagnostic strategies to reduce the mortality rate in this group of pediatric patients. Objectives: 1. To describe the clinical and laboratory characteristics characteristics of pediatric sepsis;2. To determine the prognostic value for disease severity according to the PIRO score in pediatric sepsis. Materials and methods: A case series report on 62 children diagnosed with sepsis and treated at Can Tho Children's Hospital from November 2024 to June 2025. Results: The study recorded that the most common age group was children < 1 year old, accounting for 56.5%. There were 15 cases of septic shock, accounting for 24.2%. The rate of children with underlying diseases accounted for 45.2%. The cut-off point for predicting severity using the PIRO score was 3.5 points, with sensitivity and specificity of 60% and 93.6%, respectively. Conclusion: Pediatric sepsis remains a severe burden, and the PIRO score plays a significant role in the prognosis of severity.
