Abstract

Background: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common middle ear pathology characterized by an insidious progression and often lacks typical symptoms. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, it can become irreversible and lead to long-term consequences including hearing loss. Objectives: To describe the clinical characteristics and risk factors of patients diagnosed with Otitis Media with Effusion at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital during the 2024-2025. Materials and methods: A prospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using convenience sampling. The study included 43 patients diagnosed with OME who sought examination and treatment at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from 10/2024 to 12/2025. Results: The most affected age group was 18 – 40 years old, accounting for 51.2% of cases. A medical history of rhinosinusitis was prevalent among patients at 46.5%. The most frequent reason for admission was hearing impairment with 41.9%. Common subjective, extra-otic, and physical symptoms included tinnitus, rhinorrhea, and allergic rhinosinusitis, accounting for 90.7%, 48.8%, 30.2% respectively. Upper respiratory tract infection was the most significant risk factor, at 53.5%. Conclusion: Comprehensive clinical examination and thorough assessment of risk factors are essential for early diagnosis and timely intervention of Otitis media with effusion.
