Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease is a global health problem with an increasing prevalence, significantly affecting patients’ quality of life (QoL). Assessing quality of life helps reflect treatment effectiveness and guide appropriate interventions. Objectives: To evaluate QoL and identify associated factors among patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing maintenance hemodialysis at Nhat Tan General Hospital in 2025. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 104 patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis from May to September 2025. Quality of life was assessed using the Kidney Disease Quality of Life – 36 (KDQOL-36) questionnaire and classified into below average (<50 points) and above average (≥50 points). Results: The mean quality of life score was 51.1±11.7, with 51% of patients having below-average quality of life. The lowest scores were observed in physical health (35.2±9.5) and burden of kidney disease (36.8±30.7), while symptoms/problems of kidney disease had the highest score (74.4±13.9). Three factors were independently associated with quality of life: comorbidities, online hemodiafiltration (HDF online), and age. Patients with more than two comorbidities were less likely to achieve above-average quality of life (OR=0.182; p<0.001), whereas HDF online (OR=5.996; p=0.015) and age ≥60 years (OR=3.134; p=0.026) were associated with a higher likelihood of above-average quality of life. Conclusion: The Quality of life of patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing maintenance hemodialysis was at a moderate level, with the lowest scores observed in physical health and burden of kidney disease. Comorbidities, HDF online, and age were factors associated with quality of life.
