Abstract

Background: HIV/AIDS has been a major global health concern for many years. The stigma against people living with HIV/AIDS, both in the community and healthcare facilities, remains a critical issue in HIV/AIDS prevention and control efforts. Therefore, ensuring that students have the willingness to care for people living with HIV/AIDS is critical in nursing education. Objectives: The willingness to care for people living with HIV/AIDS among nursing students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 106 third-year nursing students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. The response rate was 92.2%. Data were collected by using a self-reported questionnaire including 13 5-Likert questions. The students’ willingness was divided into 3 levels: willing (43.35–65 scores), neutral (21.68–43.34 scores), and not willing (1–21.67 scores). Results: The average willingness score was (42.53 ± 11.86); 57.5% of students were willing to care for HIV/AIDS patients, 6.6% of students were not willing to provide care, and 35.8% of students were uncertain about their willingness. Conclusions: Nursing students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy showed a moderate level of willingness to care for HIV/AIDS patients, though some students remained hesitant or unwilling to provide care. Intervention strategies or programs should be developed to enhance nursing students’ willingness to care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
