PREVALENCE OF CHRONIC DISEASES AND HOME HEALTH CARE NEEDS AMONG OLDER ADULTS IN THOI LAI DISTRICT, CAN THO CITY, 2024

Abstract
Background: The elderly population is increasing rapidly, leading to a growing burden of chronic diseases and an increasing demand for healthcare services. Home-based healthcare is a solution that helps improve access to medical services and enhance the quality of life for older adults. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of chronic diseases, the demand for home-based healthcare, and factors associated with the demand for home-based healthcare among older adults in Thoi Lai District, Can Tho City. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study with analytical components was conducted on 330 older adults in Thoi Lai District, Can Tho City in 2024. Results: The prevalence of chronic diseases among older adults was 73%, of which 46.7% had one chronic condition and 26.3% had two or more conditions. The proportion of older adults with demand for home-based healthcare was 71.5%. The most common needs included periodic health check-ups, chronic disease management, and medical examination, consultation, and treatment. Factors significantly associated with the need for home health care among older adults included age, religion, health insurance participation, care givers, current income, and convenience of access to healthcare facilities. Conclusions: The prevalence of chronic diseases and the demand for home-based healthcare among the elderly in Thoi Lai district remain high. Developing appropriate home healthcare models is essential to improve access to healthcare services and better meet the care needs of the elderly.
