THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SMARTPHONE USE PATTERNS AND SLEEP QUALITY AMONG NURSING AND MIDWIFERY STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY

Abstract

Background: Excessive smartphone use can negatively affect sleep quality, ultimately compromising students' health and academic performance. Objectives: To assess smartphone, use patterns and examine their relationship with sleep quality among nursing and midwifery students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Materials and methods:  A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 323 students from February to June 2025. Excessive smartphone use and sleep quality were evaluated using two validated scales: the Smartphone Addiction Scale – Short Version (SAS-SV) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Data were analyzed using 

Jamovi software (version 2.7.33). Results: Students reported an average duration of smartphone ownership of 7.93 ± 2.81 years, with daily usage averaging 6.81 ± 3.53 hours. Notably, 82.7% of students routinely used smartphones before bed, and 46.7% met the criteria for excessive use. The prevalence of poor sleep quality was high at 53.8%. Statistical analysis revealed that poor sleep quality was significantly associated with years of smartphone use, primary usage purpose, bedtime smartphone habits, and SAS-SV scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: Excessive smartphone use and poor sleep quality are alarmingly prevalent among nursing and midwifery students. Targeted interventions are needed to promote healthier smartphone habits, particularly limiting screen time before sleep, to improve sleep quality and academic performance.
