ACADEMIC MOTIVATION AND RELATED FACTORS AMONG NURSING STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY

Abstract
Background: Academic motivation is important for nursing students to achieve good results in study and improve their professional capacity. Therefore, in order to improve the quality of care services, an understanding of academic motivation and related factors is really necessary. Objective: To assess academic motivation and to explore factors related to academic motivation among nursing students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study design was used on 237 nursing students studying at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2022. The Academic Motivation Scale was used to evaluate nursing students’ academic motivation. Results: Nursing students with a good academic motivation was 60.7%. Confidence in learning ability; GPA of the last semester and cumulative GPA; the easy-to-understand and attractive lectures, good examples from lecturers and medical staff; suggestions/support for learning from classmates and classmates with good achievements/active in learning were factors related to academic motivation. Conclusion: The good academic motivation of nursing students was not high. Therefore, nursing educators and managers need to pay attention to this situation and related factors to have appropriate interventions.
