Abstract

  Background: Hypertension is a prevalent non-communicable disease posing a significant global disease burden. Although medication adherence is the cornerstone of blood pressure control, in reality, up to 52% of patients are non-adherent, resulting in target blood pressure control rates of only 18-23%. Objectives: To survey the situation of medication utilization and evaluate treatment adherence for hypertension at Tri Ton Medical Center, An Giang Province in 2025. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study with prospective data collection was conducted on 296 hypertensive outpatients at the Examination Department of Tri Ton Medical Center, An Giang province. Data were collected from electronic medical records and direct interviews using the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) binary version (Yes/No), with a cut-off score of ≥ 6 defined as adherence. Results: The mean age was 60.6 ± 12.4 years; females accounted for 55.7%. The most common comorbidities are dyslipidemia (63.2%), gastroesophageal reflux disease (46.3%), and diabetes mellitus (41.9%). Regarding medication use, angiotensin receptor blockers predominated (71.3%), followed by calcium channel blockers (36.8%) and beta-blockers (27.0%). Monotherapy regimens accounted for a high proportion (57.4%), while two-drug and three-drug combinations were 39.2% and 3.4%, respectively. The treatment adherence rate reached 82.4%, with the main barriers being forgetting doses (24.0%) and difficulty remembering (18.9%). No statistically significant difference in adherence levels was recorded between the monotherapy and combination therapy groups. Conclusion: The rate of hypertension treatment adherence at Tri Ton reached a high level.
