Abstract

Background: Effective communication between healthcare professionals and patients is a key factor in healthcare delivery, contributing to patient satisfaction and cooperation. The AIDET model (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) was developed to enhance clinical interactions and has been widely implemented worldwide; however, its integration into medical education in Vietnam remains limited. Objectives: To determine the proportion of medical students who are knowledgeable about the AIDET model, the related factors, and the benefits of using this model in clinical practice. Materials and methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from May 1 to May 31, 2025 among 88 second- to fourth-year medical students at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City. Data were collected using a selfadministered questionnaire assessing students’ knowledge of the AIDET communication model, selfevaluation of its implementation in clinical settings, and perceived benefits of its use, rated on a 5point Likert scale. Results: Among 88 participating students, nearly 40% had prior awareness of AIDET. Being in the fourth year of study and higher mean age were positively associated with having such knowledge. Most students reported consistently maintaining eye contact, smiling, and thanking patients; however, providing information about timing and explaining procedures remained limited. Overall, students rated the benefits of AIDET positively in terms of enhancing learning outcomes, improving communication with patients, strengthening patient–student interactions, and perceived usefulness of the model. Conclusions: The AIDET model enhances students’ confidence, facilitates patient engagement, and improves learning quality. Early integration of AIDET into the curriculum, combined with pre-clinical practice, is recommended. Further interventional studies are needed to strengthen the evidence of its effectiveness.
