STUDY ON RENAL MORPHOLOGY AND CORRELATION OF SELECTED FACTORS WITH KIDNEY SIZE ON ULTRASOUND IN ADULTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL IN 2024

Abstract
Background: Ultrasound is an essential, non-invasive diagnostic imaging method for evaluating the kidney's structure. Objectives: (1) To describe the normal anatomical and morphological characteristics of the kidneys on ultrasound among patients examined at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 2024; (2) To analyze correlations between renal dimensions and demographic as well as anthropometric factors, including age, sex, BMI, living location. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 401 patients who underwent renal ultrasonography at the Ultrasound Department, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, from December 2024 to August 2025. Results: The average size of both kidneys was: length 94.46 ± 7.14 mm, width 47.10 ± 10.90 mm, total thickness 40.77 ± 7,98 mm, parenchymal thickness 24.37 ± 3.78 mm, and renal sinus thickness 19.25 ± 6.59 mm. Variations were also found according to sex, affecting the length and parenchymal thickness of the right kidney (p<0.05), and the width, total thickness, and parenchymal thickness of the left kidney (p<0.05). Age also correlated with a difference in the length of both kidneys (p<0.05). Conclusions: Kidney dimensions in males tend to exceed those of females in specific parameters. A significant decrease in renal length is observed in subjects over 64 years of age. Anthropometric indices and living location did not demonstrate a significant influence on kidney size.
