Abstract

 Background: Medical treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) by using the nebulizer/ dose inhaler is an important factor. However, patient knowledge regarding inhalation techniques and medication adherence remains limited. Objectives: 1. To assess knowledge of practical skills and some factors relating to using nebulizer/ dose inhaler. 2. To evaluate the current level of medication adherence and some factors relating to using a nebulizer/ dose inhaler. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 96 COPD outpatients treated at Giong Rieng district medical center of Kien Giang province in 2024-2025. Data were collected through direct interviews using a standardized questionnaire for practical skills and the Test of Adherence to Inhalers (TAI) scale for medication adherence. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05.Results:Only 37.5% of patients demonstrated correct knowledge of practical skills, while 62.5% were incorrect. No statistically significant correlations were found between knowledge levels and age, gender, occupation, or education level (p > 0.05). Regarding adherence, the rates for high, moderate, and low adherence were 1%, 8.3%, and 90.6%, respectively. Adherence levels did not show significant differences based on technique knowledge, gender, or education (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The study highlights a high rate of incorrect inhalation techniques and very low medication adherence among COPD patients. No significant associations were found between patient characteristics and these two factors.
